Ramesh Ponnuru: Stopping the Next Mentally Ill Killer
By Ramesh Ponnuru | Bloomberg | Bloomberg – Thu May 15 04:15:00 UTC 2014
Representatives Tim Murphy and Ron Barber both have reasons for wanting Congress to address mental-health issues. Murphy, a Pennsylvania Republican, is the only practicing psychologist in Congress. Barber, an Arizona Democrat, was injured in a mass shooting by Jared Lee Loughner, a paranoid schizophrenic. (Barber was working for Representative Gabby Giffords, whose injuries were more severe.) The two have introduced rival bills on the topic — and are now in an increasingly bitter dispute.

Clarence Page: Can ethnic hate be a mental illness?
By Clarence Page | Chicago Tribune | Chicago Tribune – Thu Apr 17 04:15:00 UTC 2014
In early April, the Anti-Defamation League offered some happy news about a very grim topic. It reported a "significant and encouraging decline" in anti-Semitic acts across America in recent years. Unfortunately, the new spirit of hope would not last long. Less than two weeks passed before a hate-motivated killing of three innocent people in Overland Park, Kan., on the Sunday before Passover. Police have charged Frazier Glenn Miller, also known as Frazier Cross, a white supremacist from southwest Missouri with fatally shooting three people — including a 14-year-old boy — on Sunday, a day before Passover outside a Jewish community center and a Jewish senior center.

Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. soldiers had a common mental illness, such as depression, panic disorder or ADHD, before enlisting in the Army, according to a new study that raises questions about the military’s assessment and screening of recruits. More than 8% of soldiers had thought about killing themselves and 1.1% had a past suicide attempt, researchers found from confidential surveys and interviews with 5,428 soldiers at Army installations across the country.

Wary Arizona businesses urge veto of anti-gay bill
By Cindy Carcamo | Los Angeles Times | Los Angeles Times – Sun Feb 23 03:15:00 UTC 2014
Some Arizona business owners, still smarting from boycotts launched after the state passed a sweeping anti-illegal-immigration law, are trying to fend off a possible backlash from a new piece of legislation that has the gay community and its supporters in an uproar.

Like cable, this deal is essentially nonessential

Commentary: Comcast’s proposed $45 billion deal for Time Warner ignores the fact that cable service is known for being expensive, lousy and in the end uncompetitive.
