Google’s iron grip on Android: Controlling open source by any means necessary | Ars Technica

As a consumer, I have a difficult time complaining about this approach.  Google had spent a while lot of money mapping the earth, but as a consumer, I pay virtually nothing for that.  The same could be said about devices.  With a Nexus 4 I am able to have a high end smartphone, for around half the cost of comparable models.  Any significant deficiencies are not readily apparent to the average user.  Yet, Google is still making lots of money.  The moral of the story is, they have found a way to get cheap technology in the hands of consumers, and have developed an alternative revenue stream to support it.  I like the fact that it’s not the little guy getting gouged, and I hope they keep it up!
